Strongman competition

The Big Island Substance Abuse Council will be sponsoring its fourth annual strongman competition July 30 at Edith Kanaka’ole Multipurpose Stadium as part of its yearly Summer Jam Festival.

A brief in Wednesday’s edition listed the wrong date and venue.

The competition is sanctioned by North American Strongman, and this year there are lightweight (220 pounds and below) and heavyweight (more than 220) divisions.

The competition starts at 7 a.m. Weigh-ins are 6 p.m. July 29 at Resolution Gym.

Trumbo leaves Konawaena

Konawaena athletic director Bill Trumbo announced he was leaving his post, effective July 8.

Trumbo, a former UH-Hilo athletic director, said he’s set to become the director of the Big Island Sports Academy.

Basketball at Andrews Gym

The Department of Parks and Recreation at Andrews Gym will be accepting registration until July 5 for teams interested in participating in an instructional basketball league for boys and girls ages 5-8.

Age cutoff is Dec. 31, 2016. League play is scheduled to start Aug. 8.

Brantley Center golf benefit

Brantley Center, Inc. is holding its 38th annual golf tournament July 17 at Big Island Country Club.

Check-in is at 7:15 a.m. for an 8 a.m. shotgun start in a two-person best-ball format.

The entry fee of $125 includes green fees, three mulligans, door prizes and a luncheon. A hole-in-one wins $10,000.

Sea-to-Stars race registration

Registration is now open for state’s most challenging road bike race, the Sea-to-Stars, which will be held on Aug. 6, starting at Waikoloa Beach and Sports at the Queen’s Shops in Waikoloa. This race takes cyclists from sea level at the Big Island’s Waikoloa Resort area up to an elevation of more than 9,200 feet near the Visitor Information Center on Mauna Kea, where the paved highway ends.

Friendship tennis tourney

The 10th annual FilAm Friendship Tennis Tournament will be held on July 16-17 at Holua Tennis Center in Kailua Kona. This is a charity event that raises scholarship funds for eligible college bound West Hawaii graduating high school students.

Over the past nine years, the event has helped over 70 students pursue their quest for higher education. This is the biggest non-sanctioned United States Tennis Association (USTA) tournament in the state of Hawaii.
